QuiX Quantum delivers a quantum photonic processor for Europe

11 May 2022 – QuiX Quantum, the market leader in photonic quantum computing hardware, has realized the largest quantum photonic processor compatible with quantum dots for the European project PHOQUSING. The project aims to realize a quantum sampling machine that will push the potential of photonic quantum computing forward in showing a European quantum advantage. The processor realized by QuiX Quantum is the core component of the quantum sampling machine.

Thanks to its unique and mature technology, QuiX Quantum delivers a record-size 20-mode quantum photonic processor compatible with quantum dots sources for Europe. The processor is one of the key components of a near-term quantum computing device, i.e., a quantum sampling machine, able to show a quantum advantage. This achievement strengthens the position of QuiX Quantum as European leader in the quantum hardware market. QuiX Quantum processors are now the de-facto standard for photonic quantum information processing in Europe, being in use by the French, German, British, and Hungarian quantum ecosystems.

Quantum sampling machines based on light are believed to be very promising for showing a quantum advantage. The problem of drawing samples from a probability distribution, mathematically too complex for a classical computer, can be solved easily by letting light propagating through such quantum sampling machines. At the very core of quantum sampling machines there are large-scale linear optical interferometers, i.e., photonic processors.

The PHOQUSING project brings together the leading European academic (Sapienza, IFN-CNR, LIN, CNRS, Sorbonne Université) and industrial players (QuiX Quantum, Veriqloud) of quantum information processing and integrated photonics.

Prof. Fabio Sciarrino of the Physics Department of Sapienza Universitá di Roma, coordinator of the project, says: ”The established high-performance photonic technology provided by QuiX Quantum is crucial for the success of the project as it addresses the need of science-to-technology transition needed for developing useful quantum computation”. This work has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the PHOQUSING project GA no. 899544.

QuiX Quantum is a quantum technology firm located in Enschede, the Netherlands, and is a spinout of the University of Twente, with the main investors being Forward One and Oost NL. The delivered 20-mode processor, working at 925 nm, consolidates the recently released product line of quantum photonic processors compatible with quantum light sources in the near-infrared wavelength range.

QuiX Quantum becomes a member of the ARENA2036 research campus
ARENA2036 welcomes the QuiX Quantum team to the ecosystem! The Dutch-German company takes Europe's leading position in the field of photonic quantum computing and enriches the research campus with another key technology. The special thing about the QuiX Quantum technology is that when using photonic quantum computing, only the competitors have to dress warmly. The photonic processors can be operated almost entirely at room temperature, unlike the familiar method with superconducting qubits, and do not require costly and energy-intensive cooling. This technology offers potential for new applications and scaling possibilities from which many of ARENA2036 members will benefit.
